Roller Skating Cows, Bunnies… & Yams?

Having begun the year the way I suspect many of you did — watching the Rose Parade — afterward I, too, found my attention drifting during the parade’s namesake bowl game (bless their hearts, they tried, oh, how they tried). Not being a USC football fan, well, I lap-topped my laptop, grabbed my trusty mechanical pencil in hand and… doodled — not just any doodle, but doodled my first coloring page of 2009, one that fittingly celebrates one of ’08′s highlights: Charles’ Moonlight Rollerway Holiday Jubilee! (exclamation marks are compulsory following “jubilee”, right?).

Superlatives eagerly queue, each vying to describe just how great an entertainment mix this event was, but you’ll find out yourself when you go. OK, a quick taste: an Ektachrome romp through Californian holidays of yesteryear chaperoned by Charles. “The Worlds Greatest Roller Rink Organist” Dominic Cangilosi! Roller skating cows! For Pete’s sake, roller skating cows! Zombies roller skate-dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”! A slice of pumpkin pie (with whipped topping cap) figure-eighting with a can of yams and you still ask for proof? Cows? On roller skates??!!

A Very “Bob Baker Marionettes” Christmas Coloring Page

Was recently talking with friends when the conversation lit upon the unrivaled Bob Baker Marionette Theater and its crazy-great Holiday shows, a true timewarp/throw-back granting anyone who wishes, if even just temporarily, to see Christmas through kid’s eyes. So I knocked out this coloring book page, cuz, that’s apparently what I do lately when I have a cold: fan art.

So, you owe yourself this trip; make the effort to see this Los Angeles treasure. (spoiler: they server cake and ice cream after the shows).

FREE Printable Kid’s Coloring Book Pages

Here’s a roundup post: 14 coloring book pages, themes ranging from the Flying Spaghetti Monster to Santa Claus, Hallowe’en gets a good respresent’n, so, too, do shameless plugs for pet/side projects.

I suppose some kids enjoy coloring, and sure, Crayola Crayons smelled fantastic, right up alongside purplish mimeographs (ahhhh, slightly cool and damp when fresh, ready for the surreptitious sniff!), but I rarely strayed from my true love — pencils, mechanical ones if possible.

Coloring BOOKS, however, now those were great, even (or especially) the ones printed on unbleached, rough newsprint. Great, that is, not for coloring, but for the art; these introduced me to line art — fantastic variations in width and stroke, for this I’m indebted (see a master at work, Patrick Owsley).

I’m really pleased with “Thing in a Jar” activity/coloring page, as a concept if perhaps lacking in the execution. Its intent is to provide children a fun framework in which to draw their “thing” — animal, vegetable, mineral — inside a steampunk-tricked-out Leyden Jar!

Three, count ‘em three more pointless coloring book pages, no, not pointless: for I proclaim these a tribute to Zanzabelle (Silver Lake) Ice Cream Parlor and General Store. If you’ve not been you owe yourself a visit to this tiny cabin, chock-full-o retro candies, toys, art, and of course Fosselman’s Ice Cream: floats, malts, you name it. Or just a great scoop or two while you blissfully browse Wacky Packages, tin toys, and groovy stuff.

Flying Spaghetti Monster Coloring and Activity Book

Decided to try my hand at making Flying Spaghetti Monster-themed Coloring Book Pages — here’s the results.

Raising a family in the faith is difficult in this world in which we find ourselves. Children wearing an innocent eye-patch, shoulder-parrot, or have elective surgery for a prosthetic peg-leg are routinely singled out for ridicule by our secularist school system.

Much needed Pastafarian-friendly resources for children are particularly scarce, and it pleases not Flying Spaghetti Monster. That’s why we’ve started the Flickr Flying Spaghetti Monster Pool, as a place where the faithful can share images. My most recent work has been the creation of a Flying Spaghetti Monster Activity and Coloring book for children (links to large images below).

I encourage you to check out the flickr pool to suggest titles and/or morals to accompany these coloring book pages as well perusing the other cool art and photos being posted by other Pastafarians. (Links below are to large versions of the color book pages) And, of course, may you be touched by His Noodly Appendage.

At right, the special collector’s cover for the coloring book: available only at Burning Man last week. George and Sara took a stack out to playa, along with a bucket of crayons.

I, will, however, apologize for what is certainly among the worst Bob Marley caricatures / cartoon parodies ever. This, sadly, is my horribly failed attempt. I rushed. I got lazy… I’m so sorry. Somehow thought I’d cleanup it up quickly in Illustrator… yikes. Didn’t happen. That thumbnail? Looks like O.J.

About the Sketches

You know how less is more? Well, had a tough time recognizing that point while doing " Noah’s Ark" page. Some choices were easy, however. So many critters and such that it was easy to remove the rainbow (besides, a unicorn AND a rainbow in the same sketch? how gay is that? exactly). Tried to be less on the nose with the copy, too. For example, the following tagline is too much more:

"…and, lo, after 40 days and 40 nights of dinosaur dung and a certain horned quadruped’s whining ‘are we there yet?’ — Flying Spaghetti Monster did change his mind a bit"

See, way too much of that. Anyway, keep sending your ideas for any of these images as well as suggestions for future pages.

My goal was to capture the quick, weird images we got in Vacation Bible School arts and crafts activities (yes, in Kansas): part cartoon, part a manic "hey, this is fun, kids" plea (we knew better — it wasn’t), and a last minute dose of macabre arm-twisting, as in, "sure, it’s all fun and cartoon art today, but tomorrow, we’re toasting your brother!".
