Just finishing up the first of what I plan to be five or six kid's Halloween activity & craft pages, including a couple for Cycleway Coffee and thingamababy. In addition to coloring book pages I'm thinking I'll make a page of printable... ummm, what are those called? "things you glue onto toothpicks and stick into cupcakes". Seems that "Cupcake Toppers" or "cupcake flags" are common labels. So a page of Halloween cupcake flags.

Dang! Martha Stewart's already got a terrific set here: Clip-Art Craft: Spring Cupcake Toppers (PDF).

The major problem, as I see it, is that young kids would pluck one of these from the cupcake and immediately poke their eyes out, an un-YouTube worthy moment. Need alternatives to toothpicks. Perhaps candy cigarettes or carrot 'n celery spears. Yuck.

In the meantime, download my Pumpkin (also part of my growing "Coloring Book Pages" Flickr set or right here on Pizza, Kid's Coloring Book Pages, A Grab Bag Of Uneven Illustrations).

Here’s a roundup post: 14 coloring book pages, themes ranging from the Flying Spaghetti Monster to Santa Claus, Hallowe’en gets a good respresent’n, so, too, do shameless plugs for pet/side projects.

I suppose some kids enjoy coloring, and sure, Crayola Crayons smelled fantastic, right up alongside purplish mimeographs (ahhhh, slightly cool and damp when fresh, ready for the surreptitious sniff!), but I rarely strayed from my true love — pencils, mechanical ones if possible.

Coloring BOOKS, however, now those were great, even (or especially) the ones printed on unbleached, rough newsprint. Great, that is, not for coloring, but for the art; these introduced me to line art — fantastic variations in width and stroke, for this I’m indebted (see a master at work, Patrick Owsley).

I had just walked out of Our Blessed FSM’s Church of the Olive Garden, where we’d enjoyed many tasty servings of His sacraments, including all the breadsticks and salad He so amply provided, when the Spirit, still with us, moved us to stop in at Starbucks for a cup to go — which I brought home to enjoy while reading Modern Pirate Digest online. Imagine my surprise then, when I saw…

yes, His visage!

His very likeness in my beverage!

Though my initial thought was "put it on eBay, so that others (or, at least, the highest bidder) might likewise know his beneficence and enjoy walking closer to
Him", sadly, the flesh is weak, I was sleepy, and in a moment succumbed, drinking His blessed Image.

Raising a family in the faith is difficult in this world in which we find ourselves. Children wearing an innocent eye-patch, shoulder-parrot, or have elective surgery for a prosthetic peg-leg are routinely singled out for ridicule by our secularist school system.

Much needed Pastafarian-friendly resources for children are particularly scarce, and it pleases not Flying Spaghetti Monster. That’s why we’ve started the Flickr Flying Spaghetti Monster Pool, as a place where the faithful can share images. My most recent work has been the creation of a Flying Spaghetti Monster Activity and Coloring book for children (links to large images below).

I encourage you to check out the flickr pool to suggest titles and/or morals to accompany these coloring book pages as well perusing the other cool art and photos being posted by other Pastafarians. (Links below are to large versions of the color book pages) And, of course, may you be touched by His Noodly Appendage.

No, I won’t explain the caged marmot, pray on it for a while.

At right, the special collector’s cover for the coloring book: available only at Burning Man last week. George and Sara took a stack out to playa, along with a bucket of crayons.

I, will, however, apologize for what is certainly among the worst Bob Marley caricatures / cartoon parodies ever. This, sadly, is my horribly failed attempt. I rushed. I got lazy… I’m so sorry. Somehow thought I’d cleanup it up quickly in Illustrator… yikes. Didn’t happen. That thumbnail? Looks like O.J.

About the Sketches

You know how less is more? Well, had a tough time recognizing that point while doing " Noah’s Ark" page. Some choices were easy, however. So many critters and such that it was easy to remove the rainbow (besides, a unicorn AND a rainbow in the same sketch? how gay is that? exactly). Tried to be less on the nose with the copy, too. For example, the following tagline is too much more:

"…and, lo, after 40 days and 40 nights of dinosaur dung and a certain horned quadruped’s whining ‘are we there yet?’ — Flying Spaghetti Monster did change his mind a bit"

See, way too much of that. Anyway, keep sending your ideas for any of these images as well as suggestions for future pages.

My goal was to capture the quick, weird images we got in Vacation Bible School arts and crafts activities (yes, in Kansas): part cartoon, part a manic "hey, this is fun, kids" plea (we knew better — it wasn’t), and a last minute dose of macabre arm-twisting, as in, "sure, it’s all fun and cartoon art today, but tomorrow, we’re toasting your brother!".

My grade school, Antioch Elementary, indulged us this way: we had a classroom party, lots of cup cakes with pink frosting (homemade! no CostCo, our moms baked, often with a little help from Betty Crocker and Jack Daniel’s), but the highlight was popping off the lids of our Valentine Boxes.

The Valentine boxes were made early in the preceding week, then set on the shelf by the window, where we hoped our secret crushes would find satisfaction. The making of the box was a very personal act. Its shape, whether you opted for a shoe box or an oatmeal box, various grades of construction paper, stickers, stuff you’d saved up… it all got glued on. With a WIDE slot on top so no card would be refused.

We even had contests for best box. I won. I recall one red telephone shaped box and one, and here I’ve no idea why, but one year it was a black (posterboard) pot-bellied stove.

The inexpensive cards — a box of 36 ran about $1.65– were printed single-sided on card stock, the envelops really crappy. The better sets included stickers and printed envelops. Also, a good set had a Teacher card.

The idea was to ration the good cards, give those to your real friends, then dole out the cruddy ones to the kid that always smelt of playground asphalt and pee. Sometimes, even using last years cards. Or a Ziggy.

The card designs changed even in my few years of buying them. Shinier, more branding like Barbie, GI Joe, and Snoopy replacing the no-name ones.

Hey, I’m rambling– screw this. Let me know your ideas for other designs.

Check back, I’m planning on doing a few more designs and a bonus Teacher Card!

While a few of these were done from scratch on the computer in Painter (a killer program) most of these pieces began as quick pencil sketches (sometimes in a pocket notebook, sometimes on Ajisen place mat — really nice paper, and great NOODLES!). Sketches get scanned then (usually) traced in Illustrator. Sketching takes two to fifteen minutes, Illustrator takes 1 to 8 hours.

The teddy bears/pirate/shark card was traced in Photoshop — mainly due to my dread of rendering believable water with Illustrator paths.

I’ve favored Illustrator for FSM-work mainly because his luscious noodles are just faster to do with Bezier curves than by hand sketching. Though I did one to good effect using Painter’s pens, I just don’t possess the coordination required on my Wacom tablet to use this exclusively.

Shown below, the original sketch for first Valentine’s Day Card (“I’d be off my Noodle if you’d be mine”). Here’s the original sketch for “I Love You… But You Must Die” card
